The African travel and tourism industry set to contribute $168 billion to the economy over the next decade.

The African travel and tourism sector is poised for substantial growth, with an estimated annual increase of 6.5 percent over the next decade. This sector holds the potential to contribute over $350 billion (approximately Rwf433.3 trillion) to the regional economy.

This expansion not only represents an addition of $168 billion (approximately Rwf208 trillion) to the continent’s economy but also foresees the creation of more than 18 million new jobs. These insights are gleaned from a report titled “Unlocking Opportunities for Travel & Tourism Growth in Africa,” which was presented at the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) Summit on November 2.

To unlock this growth, the report underscores the significance of implementing three critical policies: developing air infrastructure, streamlining visa facilitation, and enhancing tourism marketing efforts.

In 2019, the travel and tourism sector made a significant contribution, exceeding $186 billion (approximately Rwf230.3 trillion) to Africa’s economy and welcomed a remarkable 84 million international travelers. Furthermore, this sector plays a pivotal role in employment, supporting the livelihoods of 25 million people, constituting 5.6 percent of all jobs in the region.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President and CEO, expressed optimism about the sector’s potential, stating, “Growth potential for travel and tourism in Africa is massive. It has already more than doubled since 2000, and with the right policies could unlock an additional US$168 billion in the next decade. Africa needs simplified visa processes, better air connectivity within the continent, and marketing campaigns to highlight the wealth of destinations in this breathtaking continent.”

The report also delves into the historical journey of Africa’s travel and tourism sector, which has encountered challenges such as the Global Financial Crisis in 2008 and disease outbreaks. However, it has demonstrated resilience and is on a path to recovery.

The WTTC anticipates that 2023 will be a year of nearly complete recovery for the sector, with levels expected to be just 1.9 percent below those of 2019, accompanied by the creation of approximately 1.8 million jobs.

The report identifies numerous opportunities for sustainable growth in the sector, including strategic investments, improved connectivity, streamlined visa processes, the adoption of low-carbon energy, and enhanced water efficiency. These opportunities pave the way for economic development, job creation, and sustainable growth in African travel and tourism.
