In 1952, Rwanda welcomed the introduction of tea, which has since become one of the nation’s major exports. The ideal conditions for tea cultivation, including fertile volcanic soil and a temperate climate, contribute to its success.

Large plantations account for the majority of tea cultivation, supplemented by the efforts of tea cooperatives and private growers. The rolling hills of Rwanda are adorned with tea plants, their lush greenery creating a captivating contrast against the backdrop of blue skies, dirt roads, and abundant sunshine.

Tea undergoes processing in numerous tea factories nationwide, some of which are accessible to the public, providing an opportunity for visitors to explore the tea harvesting and processing procedures and sample the final products.

Rwanda hosts tea plantation tours in various locations, with prominent ones situated around Nyungwe National Park, particularly in Gisovu and Gisakura.

Gisovu Tea Estate, nestled at the northern fringe of Nyungwe National Park, boasts shimmering fields and meandering pathways. The neatly arranged tea rows sharply contrast with the untamed greenery of the Nyungwe forest just beyond. Offering day tours and accommodation, the estate allows visitors to tour the grounds, participate in a cupping ceremony, and for those with extra time, indulge in activities such as mountain biking amidst the scenic beauty or simply relax while savoring the world’s finest tea.

Gisakura Tea Estate, located along the rolling hills at the western outskirts of Nyungwe Forest National Park, stands out as one of Rwanda’s renowned tea plantations. Tours and tastings are easily organized, and although there is no on-site accommodation, nearby guesthouses offer a convenient stay. Keep an eye out for the Colobus monkey troop residing in a forest patch within the plantation, adding a touch of wildlife intrigue to the tea exploration experience.
