[SPOTLIGHT] PICTURES: Rusizi town strides towards achieving green city status

Rusizi town has initiated a new program to transform itself into an environmentally friendly city, positioning it as one of the six secondary district authorities. Located in South-Western Rwanda, Rusizi district showcases picturesque landscapes along the border with DR Congo’s Bukavu town and is currently undergoing a significant transformation in both business and tourism.

Mayor Anicet Kibiriga, speaking during the ‘Rusizi Accountability Day and Coordination Meeting’ on November 29, underscored the town’s dedication to adopting a green and clean image in line with government policies. The event brought together local authorities, opinion leaders, security personnel, and stakeholders to address crucial issues within the district and assess its ongoing development.

Upon entering the elevated town, strategically planted palm trees line the main highway and the town’s periphery. Mayor Kibiriga conveyed his vision for Rusizi town, declaring, “The town is transforming, evident changes meet the eye. We aspire to turn Rusizi into a green city—this is our objective.” He underscored the commitment to prevent the disposal of plastic bags or empty bottles on the streets outside designated zones.

Despite the ongoing enhancements and established infrastructure, the district intends to construct a new roundabout equipped with free Wi-Fi, serving as a communal space. Downtown business figures, including Jean Claude Habimana, affirmed that the town’s expansion is rendering it increasingly appealing and essential for development as a secondary city.

“Rusizi is progressing into a more vibrant town, especially given its proximity to Bukavu town in the neighboring DR Congo, contributing to the area’s vitality,” remarked Habimana. Alice Ayinkamiye, a businesswoman with a shop in Kamembe Sector, praised the initiative for its approach to climate change, expressing, “It’s a commendable step for climate change. Everyone deserves and requires fresh air and a conducive work environment.”

Beyond the town’s verdant aesthetic, new bypass roads are being paved to bolster the tourism sector, connecting various main suburbs. Additionally, new structures are emerging within the town and along the shores of Lake Kivu.
