Rubavu Residents Advocate for Enhanced Facilities at Nyamyumba Hot Springs

The absence of upgraded amenities at Nyamyumba Hot Springs in Rubavu District has prompted discontent within the local community, urging the need for its transformation into a tourism hub.

Situated near Lake Kivu, Nyamyumba draws individuals from diverse backgrounds who seek the therapeutic qualities of its water. Visitors frequent the site to observe the springs and indulge in the hot tub experience, aiming to enhance blood circulation, alleviate stress, and address skin irritations.

Presently, the hot springs feature two distinct water sources, each accessible through separate sections: a regular area priced at Rwf1,000 and a VIP section at Rwf2,000.

The local community desires updated facilities, including changing rooms for both genders, and the absence of coffee shops and restaurants in the vicinity remains a concern.

Joseph Ndayisenga, a 31-year-old geography teacher in Nyanza District, is a regular visitor to the hot springs for relaxation. We encountered him in the VIP section.

“I frequently come here to rejuvenate my body as this water is a therapeutic source. I was fatigued, but now I feel at ease,” he expressed.

The hot springs attract both locals and foreigners, with the latter often seeking warmth or enjoying a natural massage.

Mzee George Njoroge, a Kenyan national, describes the comforting warmth of the hot springs, expressing how it makes him feel good. Kabaka Muteesa, a mechanic, frequents the hot springs for a rejuvenating body massage. Those interviewed, including Ndayisenga, emphasize the inadequate facilities at the hot springs, both as a public space and a tourist attraction.

Mzee George advocates for essential amenities like changing rooms, washrooms, and food and drink options in every public place. Isaiah Izibyose, a local tourist guide, suggests the necessity of a quality pool to enhance the site’s appeal as a tourism destination.

Déogratias Nzabonimpa, Vice Mayor in Charge of Economic Development in Rubavu District, reveals ongoing efforts with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) to attract investors for the area’s development. The plan involves establishing a five-star hotel on the island and upgrading the hot springs into improved swimming pools. Nzabonimpa anticipates the involvement of two interested investors in the near future.

Currently, a private company is collaborating with the district to maintain cleanliness at the hot springs as a means of preserving natural resources and ensuring a welcoming environment for visitors until the full development is finished.
