Affirmation of Kendrick Lamar as Main Act for the ‘Move Afrika’ Event in Kigali

Renowned American hip-hop icon Kendrick Lamar Duckworth, known as Kendrick Lamar, has been announced as the headline performer for ‘Move Afrika: A Global Citizen Experience,’ the inaugural African music tour scheduled for December 6 in Kigali.

Global Citizen’s recent announcement revealed that ‘Move Afrika’ is a substantial five-year initiative, pioneering an unprecedented international music tour in Africa, designed to showcase the continent’s best to the world while also stimulating investments in the host communities.

The first concert of this tour will be held on December 6 at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda, featuring Grammy Award-winning star Kendrick Lamar. Furthermore, his independent multimedia services company, PgLang, will curate the tour for the next five years, running from 2023 through 2028.

In collaboration with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), Rwanda will serve as the host for ‘Move Afrika’ annually for the next five years. Additionally, each year will see the addition of more countries to the tour itinerary, with the goal of expanding to five countries by 2025.

Francis Gatare, Chief Executive Officer of RDB, emphasized that “Rwanda Development Board’s core mandate is to create experiences that address the development priorities of our continent, generate employment and income, and focus on youth. Together with Global Citizen and Move Afrika, we aim to position Rwanda as an entertainment hub for all African nations to benefit from the global creative industry.”

Kendrick Lamar will be the second hip-hop legend to visit Rwanda, following J Cole, who performed for the Patriots during the inaugural season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) held in Rwanda in 2021.

Born on June 17, 1987, Kendrick Lamar is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter, widely recognized as one of the most influential rappers of his generation. His work often incorporates social, political, religious, and philosophical themes, playing a significant role in promoting social consciousness among millennials. He has earned accolades from Billboard and Vibe, naming him the second-greatest rapper of all time, and has received critical acclaim for his distinctive rhythms, artistic evolution, and introspective lyricism.
